|Niner Softball Opens Season on Saturday|
Charlotte, N.C.- Chelsea Ingersoll and the rest of the Niner softball team hit the road to start the 2014 season squaring off with Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. for a doubleheader.
“We are excited to get the chance to play and to start the season started. The team is hungry for it, and they want some outside competition,” said Coach Aimee DeVos.
“It gives us (coaches) a chance to see the team operate fully to see what our team is capable of doing offensively and defensively. We have pitched very well and had solid defense against them in recent years. I think it will get rid of some of the pregame jitters.”
The Niners are 11-3-1 all-time against the Runnin’ Bulldogs winning four of the last five with the Runnin’ Bulldogs picking up a win the last time in Boiling Springs. Charlotte took the doubleheader last season at home winning 7-3 and 10-2.
Courtney Carroll went 3-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs in the last meeting. Chelsea Lisikatos picked up the win in the second game throwing five innings and striking out four, while going 2-3 from the plate with a RBI.
Charlotte has won six of the last seven season openers and the first time since 2008 that the Niners have opened the season on the road. In 2008, Charlotte defeated Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C., 11-0 and 12-2.
Gardner-Webb completed a doubleheader scrimmage against Spartanburg Methodist picking up victories in both games. Ashley Rhyne is the probable starter for the Runnin’ Bulldogs.
The Niners look to Lexi Betancourt, coming off a season ending injury early in the 2013 season, to start the Niners off in the right direction in the circle. Chelsea Lisikatos, the only returner to see action last season in the circle, and freshman Mackenzie Hauser will be available for game two.
The doubleheader will start at 1 pm with game two following. The Niners will kick off the homestand on Wednesday, Feb. 12, taking on South Carolina at the D.L. Phillips Complex at 3 pm.
