CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte softball team split a pair of games during the final day of the 49er Invitational at the D.L. Phillips Complex, earlier Sunday evening.

The Niners (6-3 overall) handed Sacred Heart (1-2) its second loss of the season with a 3-0 shutout in game two of the tournament. Charlotte battled for eight innings but fell 3-2 to Robert Morris (4-2) in the final game of the tournament.

Chelsea Lisikatos recorded the 49ers’ first shutout of the season in the win against Sacred Heart and improved to 2-0 in the circle. She recorded a game-high five strikeouts.

The Niners jumped on the Pioneers early and clinched a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Lisikatos started a two-out rally after hitting a double to right field.  Jackie Kleinsmith kept it going with a single to centerfield to drive in Lisikatos. A double from freshman Jessica Plemmons scored Kleinsmith to give Charlotte the 2-0 advantage.

Charlotte added another run in the seventh inning after Plemmons belted her first career home run to give the Niners a solid 3-0 cushion.

Sacred Heart had opportunities to score and left eight runners on base. However, the 49ers’ defense was solid and remained tough throughout the game to keep the Pioneers scoreless.

Plemmons led the Niners’ offense and was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Briana Gwaltney also finished with a pair of hits. Natalie Capone and Chelsea Stamey both recorded a hit.

It was Robert Morris in the final game that had the quick-witted offense and took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. The 49ers answered in the fourth inning as Gwaltney reached on a single to set up Chelsea Ingersoll who smacked a two-run homer to tie the game.

Both teams battled but it was the Colonials who took advantage in the eighth inning to tally a run and take a 3-2 lead. With one out and a runner on second, freshman Courtney Carroll singled to centerfield to move pinch runner Hayley Lewis to third. Alex Rogers reached on a fielder’s choice but Lewis was picked off third base for the second out. Robert Morris closed the game with a Charlotte strikeout to seal the win.

Capone and Carroll led the 49ers with two hits each. Katie Watkins fell to 3-3 and recorded a season-high nine strikeouts.

The Niners, who have played every game at home this season, will go on the road to face North Carolina on Wednesday, Feb. 27 in Chapel Hill at 6 p.m.
