Niners to compete in two meets over the weekend

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte track and field team will compete at the Fifth Annual HPU VertKlasse Meeting on Saturday, March 23 at the Vert Track, Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium, hosted by High Point University.

Charlotte’s throwers will be competing at the Weems Baskin Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina on March 22-23. Nearly 30 schools and 800 student athletes will be on hand over the course of the two-day meet.

Field events are scheduled to begin on Friday at noon with the women's hammer throw. On Saturday, a full slate of events on both the field and the track are scheduled. The field events kick off at 10:00 a.m. with the women's discus throw.

The HPU VertKlasse Meeting kicks off on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the men’s mile and women’s javelin in the participation section. Opening ceremony is slated for a 2 p.m. start followed by the men’s 400m hurdles.

The 49ers are coming off an amazing opening weekend were two school records were broken at the 49er Classic. Senior Jake Deaton who was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Performer of the Week, placed first in both the shot put, with a throw of 59’02.75, and the discus, with a school record throw of 183’05.

Junior Aubrey Dowding’s toss of 134’08 in the javelin was good for fifth place, breaking the previous school record of 134'01 set in 2011.

Sophomore T'Sheila Mungo earned Women’s Performer of the Week honors after competing in the 400m at the Charlotte 49er Classic. The Charlotte, N.C., native placed first out of 72 competitors with a time of 53.65 seconds. Her time led the conference and is second in the NCAA east region after Saturday’s competition.

Anthony Campbell received Men’s Rookie of the Week after securing a second-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 50’04.75, and a personal record mark of 22’03 in the long jump.

Both the men’s and women’s relay teams performed well last week along with several top three performances in the 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 100m, 200m, shot put, and triple jump.

The Niners' next meet is scheduled for Saturday, March 30 at the University of Virginia Quad in Charlottesville, Va.
