|Mungo breaks record at the Va. Tech Invitational|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Sophomore T'Sheila Mungo shattered the school record in the 500m run with a time a 1:11.03, breaking the previous indoor record (1:12.68) at the Virginia Tech Invitational at Rector Field House, Friday evening in Blacksburg.
Mungo, the current Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Track and Field Performer of the Week, was the top collegiate finisher and second in the event. She held the previous indoor record which she set last season at the A-10 Indoor Championship.
Senior Cordell Livingston won the triple jump with a leap of 50'0 which now ranks third on the all-time top ten list. Livingston also took fourth in the 60m hurdles (8.10).
Junior Joann Blakney finished third in the 60m with a time of 7.49 that leads all of Charlotte's performances this season.
Freshman Alvonna Blakney, who also received honors as the A-10 Women's Track and Field Rookie of the Week following last week's competition, finished fourth in the 60m hurdles with a season-best time of 8.70. That time is tied for fifth on the all-time list. Sophomore Juanita Leto and LeAnna Morrison were sixth and seventh respectively (8.86).
Junior Briauna Jones was third in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 40'0. Morrison who was fifth also turned in a season-best performance with a mark of 39'0.25.
In the pole vault, junior Jana Eatman finished fourth, clearing 10'0. Junior Katrina Wright also finished fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 53'08.50 and junior Toby Jo Klauenberg was sixth (49'1).
"We had a very good first day, slightly exceeding my expectations for the second meet after the winter break," head coach Robert Olesen said. "I'm looking forward to what the second day of the meet holds in store for us."
The meet resumes on Saturday, January 19 at 11 a.m. beginning with the men's high jump.
