|Charlotte heads to UAB Blazer Invitational|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A new year, a new semester, and the first track meet of 2013 for the Charlotte 49ers begins with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Blazer Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Thursday, Jan. 10. The meet concludes on Friday, Jan. 11.
The men's and women's 5000-meter run will kick-off the meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday as the only scheduled event. The meet will resume on Friday morning at 8 a.m.
The Niners are coming off a strong performance in the season-opener that featured nine first place finishes at the JDL College Kickoff in Winston-Salem. Charlotte saw stellar efforts from veterans Cordell Livingston Joshua Dunston, Coye Still, Jake Deaton, Robert Wilson, Briauna Jones, and Katrina Wright. The men's and women's 4x400 meter relay team also dominated in the season-opener.
Alongside its efforts from the upperclassmen, a few rookies also stood out for the 49ers. Anthony Campbell was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week following his second place finish in the triple jump (47'03"/14.42m). Freshman Anthony Bynum won the 300 meter dash (34.19) in his debut. Bynum's 300m time put him second on the all-time top 10 list behind only All American alum Darius Law.
Despite the 49ers' strong start to the 2012-13 indoor season, they know that they still have room for improvement. The UAB Blazer Invitational will serve as a great meet to see how the Niners have trained over the break and to get reacquainted with some Conference USA schools. Charlotte will rejoin C-USA in the fall and the Birmingham CrossPlex will be the host for the track and field conference championships.
"This is an opportunity to see the facility and get a feel for it," head coach Robert Olesen said. "The reasons for attending this meet are beyond performance. We've never competed in Birmingham and it's our first overnight trip so I think this is where the team will start to gel more and create memories."
Following the UAB Blazer Invitational, the 49ers will head to Blacksburg, Va., for the Virginia Tech Invitational on January 18-19.
