EUGENE, Ore. – Charlotte senior Jake Deaton, a member of the 49ers men’s track & field program, will participate at the NCAA Championships at 7 p.m. (EST) Friday at Oregon’s Haywood Field in Eugene, Ore.
Deaton qualified for the event by placing 11th in the discus at the NCAA East Regional March 23 with a toss of 179 feet, 10 inches (54.83m) at North Carolina A&T’s Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C. The Top 12 finishers in each event automatically earned a spot in the national competition.
Friday’s event schedule marks the third of four days of competition, as the national championships began Wednesday and conclude Saturday. Pac-12.com is slated to broadcast the events Friday with ESPNU picking up the feed beginning at 7:30 p.m. (EST).
The top-eight finishers in each event score points for their respective schools. Deaton will be one of 24 scheduled competitors in the discus and the lone Atlantic 10 participant in the event.
Deaton highlighted his spring outdoor campaign with a school-record heave of 186-3 (56.78m) at the Charlotte Invitational April 19.
The Mooresville, N.C., product was named the Atlantic 10’s Most Outstanding Performer for 2013 after winning both the shot put and discus at the conference meet, held at the 49ers’ Irwin Belk Track & Field Center May 4-5.
