49ers qualify 12 for NCAA East Preliminary

Charlotte, N.C. – Twelve student-athletes will represent Charlotte at the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Championship on May 23-25. The host site for the East region is North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.

Student-athletes that have posted the best times this season that rank in the top 48 of their respective event(s) and declare to compete in them have qualified for the two NCAA regional championship meets (East and West).

The men’s team has eight participants and is highlighted by three athletes who will compete in two or more events. Freshman Anthony Bynum is ranked tenth in the East region in the 200m and has a seed time of 20.67. Bynum will also compete in the 100m where he is 34th with a seed time of 10.41 and the 4x100m relay that is 20th (40.36).

Senior Jake Deaton qualified for a pair of events. Deaton will compete in the discus throw, where he is ranked 13th with a school record distance of 186’3 which he set at the Charlotte Invitational in April. Deaton is also 18th in the shot put (59’2.75).

Junior Khyran Shank will join Bynum in the 100m where he is 16th with a time 10.32 and the 4x100m team along with senior John Osborne and junior LeRoy Rouse.

Freshman Anthony Campbell and sophomore Trey McRae are both ranked 26th in their respective field events. Campbell will compete in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 50’4.75. Campbell recently set an Atlantic 10 Conference record in the triple jump (49’09.25) at the conference championship. McRae will participate in the high jump and enters the championship with a season-best leap of 7’00.25.

Coye Still rounds out the jumps for Charlotte and qualified for the long jump where he is 40th with a leap of 24’2.5.

The women’s team had four athletes qualify. Sophomore T'Sheila Mungo is 20th in the East region in the 400m and ran a time of 53.26 at the Charlotte Invitational.

Junior Katrina Wright is Charlotte’s only field athlete on the women’s side. Wright is 35th in the discus throw with a school record toss of 163’8 set at the Charlotte Invitational.

Sophomore LeAnna Morrison qualified for the 400m hurdles and is 32nd in the region with a school record time of 58.99 set at the A-10 Championships.

Senior Maraya Slatter’s 800m time of 2:08.22 ranks 46th in the region. Slatter recorded that time at the N.C State Last Chance meet last week.

The qualifiers out of these regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore. Twelve competitors from each individual event and 12 teams from each relay event advance from each preliminary championships competition site to the final championships competition.
