CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Two school records fell as the 49ers completed the final day of the Charlotte Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center on Friday afternoon.
Jake Deaton continued his domination in the discus and broke his previous school record (183’05) after finishing first with a toss of 186’03 to set a new school mark.
Katrina Wright also shattered her previous school record (157’6) set in 2012 on Friday with a toss of 163’08 in the discus throw en route to a second place finish. Toby Jo Klauenberg finished fifth in the event with a personal-record toss of 142’03. Klauenberg was also second in the shot put (40’03.25).
In the 100m dash, Khyran Shank won with a personal-best time of 10.32. Anthony Bynum followed in second (10.41) with a season-best time and LeRoy Rouse finished fifth (10.63). Briauna Jones finished fifth in the women’s 100m (12.17).
The men’s 4x100m relay team of John Osborne, Rouse, Bynum, and Shank won the event with a time of 40.67. The women’s team (Chelsie Carlton, Briauna Jones, Sarah Justice, and Alvonna Blakney) finished second with a time of 47.27.
Charlotte picked up a pair of wins in the men’s and women’s 400m. Anthony Bynum finished first (47.30), followed by Christopher Tate in second (48.49), Brian Hamilton in third (49.01), and Dij'aun Higgins in sixth (49.49). On the women’s side, T'Sheila Mungo won the event (53.26) as Jaleah Wilder was the third collegiate finisher (58.69) and Taylor Carcella was the fifth collegiate runner (58.83). Additionally, Hamilton and Mungo garnered season-best times.
In the high jump, Trey McRae (7’0.25) and Brittney Simmons (5’05) had season-best leaps to finish first. Coye Still was third (6’04). Still was also third in the long jump with a personal-record jump of 23’09. On the women’s side, Jones was second (18’03), Chelsie Carlton was third (17’09.50), and Alicia Gainey was seventh (17’02). Jones also finished second in the triple jump (37’09.50). In the pole vault, Kevin Calhoun was second and finished with a season-best mark of 15’07. Jana Eatman was third (10’06).
Juanita Leto ran a team-best 13.77 in the 100m hurdles to finish as the second collegiate runner and third overall.
Charlotte will return back to action on Saturday, May 4 when it hosts the Atlantic 10 Championship.
