Track & Field Solid After Day One of A10 Champs

AMHERST, Mass. - After the opening day of the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the 49ers track & field team is looking good. The Niner men are in second place with 64 points, just 11 points behind first place Rhode Island. The Charlotte women are currently fifth with 30.6 points, but still have their strongest event groups, sprints and hurdles, left to compete tomorrow.

 

In the events that have gone final after today, several 49ers contributed points to the team totals. Senior Dakota Lowery finished runner-up in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:07.47. Junior Maria Ruiz (10:49.07; 7th in 3,000m steeplechase), who PR’d by over six seconds, and senior Laura McCary (36:41.24; 7th in 10,000m run) both scored for the Niners with top-eight finishes in their respective events. 

 

The women’s 4x800m relay was one highlight of the day, winning the event in 8:54.94. That group, composed of freshmen Rachel Miller, Tianna McHenry, Taylor Carcella and junior Maraya Slatter, moved into second all-time in school history with the finish.

 

On the field side, freshman Kacie Sledge took sixth in the women’s high jump, clearing a personal best height of 1.63m to move into fourth all-time. Sophomore Briauna Jones also turned in a PR to become sixth all-time in the long jump, finishing runner-up in the event (5.90m). 

 

Senior Jake Wainwright won the men’s long jump with a distance of 7.40m. Rookie Trey McRae finished third in the men’s high jump, clearing 2.07m. Junior Robert Wilson took fourth in the men’s pole vault, vaulting 4.65m. Senior Jason Roberts finished second in the hammer (59.27m) with a huge PR, while junior Kerrick Williams was fifth (49.94m). Sophomore Osvaldo Hernandez took fourth in the javelin throw (57.11m).

 

Other notables included rookie distance runner Zach Greth (10th; 31:03.63), who ran the fifth-fastest time in Charlotte history in the first 10,000m event of his collegiate career. In addition, junior Ross Roberson moved into eighth all-time (12th; 31:26.50) with a PR time in the event. In the women's portion of the event, junior Hana Sutchar set a new personal best, finishing 11th overall in 37:12.13.

 

The 49ers won an overwhelming number of preliminary events as well, with the finals still to come on Sunday. Sophomore Joann Blakney (11.63) and senior Sirrell Butler (11.84) finished first and second to qualify for finals in the 100m dash. Blakney also won the prelims of the 200m dash (23.95), while freshman T’Sheila Mungo finished second (24.30). Mungo also won the 400m prelim with a time of 54.68.

 

For the men, Khyran Shank (10.62) and LeRoy Rouse (10.70) finished 1-2 in the 100m dash preliminary, while Shank also took first in the 200m prelim (21.02) alongside Jamil Muhammed-Ray (3rd; 21.78). Isaac McReynolds won the 110m hurdle prelims (14.25) and Cordell Livingston won the 400m hurdles (52.83) to qualify for finals. 

 

Also noteworthy are Slatter, who won the 800m prelim (2:11.69) and LeAnna Morrison, who finished second in the 400m hurdle prelims (1:00.85).
