|Road trip closes with Sunday setback to Rams|
KINGSTON, R.I. - The Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team played its final road match of the 2012 regular season Sunday but could not breakthrough in dropping a 2-0 decision at Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 action.
The Rams controlled much of the contest, holding a 14-to-4 shot advantage and using a goal in each half to put a cap on the Niners' five-game road swing through the conference.
Rhode Island (10-7-1, 3-4 A-10) jumped out in front on a Maggie MacDonald score at 11:03. She received a pass from Kat Prenda and placed her attempt inside the upper right corner of the goal frame to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
The 49ers would only get one more look at the net the remainder of the period, as Amanda Jones' shot at 29:07 was sent wide.
Despite the relentless URI attack, Annika McHenry kept Charlotte (10-5-2, 4-2-1 A-10) within striking distance with multiple saves between the pipes, eventually finishing with six stops.
Jones had a header turned away by the Rams' Chelsea Broghamer in the 60th minute, while nine minutes later Darby Broeker pushed an attempt wide of the net.
McHenry came up with a save on a header from Ari Stanton at 78:47, but at 80:01, Ellie Bailes expanded the URI cushion to two. She cleaned up a rebound off another Stanton shot and a Jennifer Barrientos pass to increase the Rams' lead to 2-0. Only one more shot would ensue the remainder of the contest and Rhode Island held on for the victory.
The 49ers return to action when they close out the regular season at home next weekend, starting at 7 p.m. Friday against Saint Louis at Transamerica Field. The contest will kick-off Autism Awareness Weekend, which also includes at 1 p.m. Sunday Senior Day match with Atlantic 10 newcomer Butler.
