St. Louis, Mo - Macky Wingo scored her fourth goal of the season but the Charlotte 49ers lost their Atlantic 10 opener, 2-1, on the road at Saint Louis.
"Tonight was a disappointing result," Charlotte coach John Cullen said. "For large parts of tonight's game we had decent control but our final passes and final decisions were not good enough and it cost us a victory. I felt both of their goals could have been prevented and that is the hard thing to deal with in a loss. We have made some positive strides as of late but there is no denying tonight was a setback. We have to bounce back immediately and that is our sole focus this coming week."
The 49ers began the game pressing the action with shots by Amanda Jones and Jonna Handra in the first five minutes but their shots went either wide or high.
Then, Saint Louis scored the game's first goal when Jenny Hummert put a shot from 35 yards out into the back of the net in the 22nd minute.
Then, in the 37th minute, Sara Trexler passed the ball to Wingo who put the ball into the lower right corner of the goal from five yards out. Wingo's goal was the 19th of her career.
In the second half, Wingo, Handra and Lacey McGowan all took shots but their shots went high or were stopped by Saint Louis' Walsh.
Then, in the 67th minute, Saint Louis's Amanda Strebler scored from four yards out off a deflection giving Saint Louis the lead for good.
Over the final ten minutes of the game, Charlotte's Wingo and Handra had scoring chances but their shots were either wide or were stopped by Saint Louis' Walsh.
Charlotte finished the game with 13 shots. Handra led the 49ers with four shots. Wingo tallied three shots. Bernard and McGowan recorded two shots apiece.
Charlotte returns to action next weekend when they host Massachusetts and Rhode Island in their Atlantic 10 home opening weekend at Transamerica Field, October 7-9.
