The Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team had four of its players earn postseason All-Atlantic 10 honors
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Charlotte women's soccer will enter the postseason with four of its players having earned All-Atlantic 10 honors it was announced Wednesday by the league office prior to the start of the conference tournament this week.
Representing the 49ers on the all-conference squads were Amanda Jones (All-Atlantic 10 Second Team), Maddie Kiebel (All-Rookie Team) and Alex Kubrick and Sarah Ann Waugh (All-Academic Team). The four accolades are the most by the program since it collected nine in 2010. Jones garnered her second A-10 plaudit after being tabbed to the All-Rookie Team last fall, the only Charlotte member to receive a postseason award. She paces the Niners with seven goals, 19 points and 47 shots, while sharing the team lead with five assists. The Mahwah, N.J., native opened the league slate with both goals, including the overtime winner, in a 2-1 home victory over VCU. She was listed among the Top 20 players in the conference in the preseason and at midseason by TopDrawerSoccer.com. Kiebel was a Newcomer to Watch in the preseason by Soccer America and concluded her first collegiate season with a solid campaign before an injury prevented her from taking the field in the last two weeks. She scored once, against Francis Marion, while adding a pair of assists, including Jones' game-tying goal against VCU, in her first year wearing the green and white. The Parker, Colo., product tied for third on the 49ers squad with her two assists. Kubrick, a Greensboro, N.C., native and Waugh, who hails from Statesville, N.C., comprise the Charlotte representatives on the All-Academic Team by carrying a 3.95 and 4.0 GPA, respectively. Kubrick has started all 11 matches in which she has played in net, allowing a goal or less each time with three shutouts. Her trio of clean sheets raises her career total to 12, lifting her into third place on the school's all-time list. She stopped 10 Clemson shots were a career best in the 1-1 tie with the Tigers Sept. 9 at Transamerica Field. Waugh, one of three captains on this year's team, earned a start in 18 of the 19 matches in which she played at her defender position. She finished with six shots on the year, including one that skimmed off the right post in last Friday's match with Saint Louis. The 49ers will open Atlantic 10 Championships play at 11 a.m. Thursday when they face regular-season champion and top seed La Salle in Kingston, R.I.
