Assistant coach Robert Lane will be on the sidelines for his fourth season with Charlotte women’s soccer in 2014 after helping lead the program to the Conference USA East Division crown last fall. A former head coach at the Division II level, Lane spent six months as an assistant at Georgia Southern before making the move back to the Queen City.

“I am extremely excited to back in the Charlotte area and working under the guidance of John Cullen,” Lane said at the time of his hiring. “It’s exciting to have the opportunity to work with a championship-caliber program and assist it in reaching new standards.”

Lane has been instrumental in the 49ers’ consistency over the last three years, helping to guide the program to a spot in the Conference USA Tournament semifinals last fall and into the Atlantic 10 Tournament each of his first two seasons. He has worked alongside head coach John Cullen in the development of eight players to all-league honors.

“He has been a great addition,” Cullen said. “He brings another view of the game and certainly brings an honest appreciation of hard-working players. Robert is always looking for players first and foremost that are competitive. He wants to see a competitive environment every day at practice.”

Lane served as head coach at Division II Belmont Abbey in Belmont, North Carolina, for two years in 2009 and 2010. With the Crusaders, the team mounted a 31-8-1 record, including an 18-2-1 ledger in the Conference Carolinas. Belmont Abbey won its first conference crown since 2006 during his inaugural campaign on its way to the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001.

He was selected as the league’s coach of the year in 2010 after leading the program to a national ranking and the No. 1 listing in the NCAA Southeast Region poll. The Crusaders finished that season with a 17-2-3 record, including an unbeaten 9-0-1 mark against conference foes. They played in their sixth-straight league tournament championship match and garnered an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

In just his two seasons, he oversaw the development of 10 all-conference picks, two league players of the year and four all-region choices.

Before moving on to Belmont Abbey, Lane spent three years (2006-08) as the head men’s soccer coach at Division II Coker in Hartsville, South Carolina, improving the team’s record each season. In 2008, the Cobras knocked off Division I foe High Point, 2-1, on their way to an appearance in the conference tournament, their first in six years.

Lane also spent time as an assistant men’s soccer coach at Montreat (Montreat, North Carolina) and Barton (Wilson, North Carolina) prior to accepting his first head coaching post at Coker.

He is active on the state and club levels, as well, serving on the NC ODP and FC Carolina Alliance staffs.

Lane graduated from East Carolina in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He later obtained his master’s in business administration from Regis in 2010. He also owns an Advanced National Diploma from the NSCAA.

Lane and his wife Neeley reside in Charlotte with their daughter, Kathleen “Kately”.
