Charlotte, N.C.– The Charlotte 49ers Track and Field program heads to Birmingham, Ala. for the 2014 Conference USA Men's and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Championships get underway Friday, February 28 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. The meet concludes on Saturday, March 1. UAB and the CrossPlex are hosting the event for the third consecutive season.
The preliminary events will begin at 9 a.m. CT on Friday with the pentathlon and heptathlon, followed by field events at 1 p.m. Saturday's action starts with the heptathlon 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m run at 10 a.m. The championship field events will begin later that day with the men's weight throw and triple jump and women's high jump at noon. The running events are slated to begin at 2 p.m. The championships will conclude with the final awards presentation set for 5:45 p.m.
"We are excited. The conference championship is always a highlight for the team," said Coach Robert Olesen. "It is apparent that we are in a more challenging conference than we are accustomed too the past seven or eight years. We are going to go and do our best."
The Niners will be looking for its second men’s title in the Conference USA and the first for the women’s.
Joann Blakney, Katrina Wright and T'Sheila Mungo will be looked upon to finish high in their respective events on the women's sice. Blakney is ranked highly heading into the meet with the top spot in the 60m (7.37) and long jump (19' 11.5). Blakney is sitting in third in the 200m (24.21).
Kerrick Williams is ranked highly in the weight throw and shot put. Anthony Bynum is in scoring position in the 60m and 200m. Michael Tamayo broke the school record in the 600m and 1000m last weekend. Tamayo will be running the 800m.
