IRVING, Texas – Charlotte swept Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors in the final weekend prior to the 2014 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Junior Michael Tamayo earned men’s honors with a pair of school records while senior Joann Blakney won three events and set a C-USA season best in the long jump to earn women’s recognition.

MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
MICHAEL TAMAYO, CHARLOTTE
Junior/600m, 1000m/Mebane, N.C.
Tamayo set the school record for both the 600m and the 1000m at the Virginia Tech Challenge. Tamayo ran the 600 in 1:19.57, beating the school mark by two seconds. He went on the set the school record in the 1000, finishing second in the event with a time of 2:27.69. This is the first C-USA Athlete of the Week honor of his career.
FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
JOANN BLAKNEY, CHARLOTTE
Senior/Long Jump, 60m, 200m/Charlotte, N.C.
Blakney won three events at the Virginia Tech Challenge on Feb. 21-22. She won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.42 and the 200 with a time of 24.21. Blakney also won the long jump with a C-USA-leading leap of 19’11.5”. The senior has posted the fastest time in the conference in the 60 and the third-fastest time in the 200. This is the first C-USA Athlete of the Week honor of her career.
