The White team took the first three of four sets on Saturday night en route to a 3-1 win over the Green team in Charlotte Volleyball’s annual Green/White match on Saturday in Halton Arena. White pulled away late in set one for a 25-22 win before back-to-back 25-17 victories in sets two and three. The Green team staked themselves out to a large lead in set four, but had to fight off a furious White rally, holding on to a 25-23 win in the finale.
Irem Asci and Sarah McDonald led their respective sides with five kills in the opening set as the White team hit .270 as a unit. Freshman Sarah Adams led Green in set two with five kills hitting .400 while posting four digs. Fellow Green teammate and freshman Michaela White popped up five of her seven digs on the night in set two. The White team’s Savannah Gaster also recorded five kills and added a block assist while Claire Kreuz added three as the White team went up 2-0.
After the second set, teams were shifted around a bit ending the “Newcomers vs. Returners” theme to start.
In set three, White hit a match-high .345 led by Gaster’s four kills hitting .800 in the set followed closely by Laura Cantrell hitting .500. Asci, along with Abreia Epps, each posted three kills in the set three loss for Green. After jumping out to a big lead in set four, Green had to stave off White’s comeback thanks to four kills from Sarah McDonald and three from Marshae Bradbury.
Gaster ended the night with an overall high 14 kills followed by Adams’ dozen kills. Michaela White added a total of 37 assists on the night while Britney Leigh Held dished out 27. Defensively, libero’s Shelby Green popped up 21 digs while Morgan Barker added 16. Semen Sen led all hitters overall posting a clip of just over .400 on the night.
"Were seeing a lot of improvement from different individuals so far through preseason," remarked Head Coach Gokhan Yilmaz. "Right now we're trying to fit in all the newcomers with the returners so our goal for the first weekend is to find the best possible starting lineup so we start the season on a positive note."
Charlotte will come together as one team for the 2014 season openers on Friday afternoon in Halton Arena. The Niners will take on Morgan State (2:30pm) and UNC Greensboro (7:30pm) in day one of the Charlotte Invitational befoe facing ETSU (12:00pm) and Sacramento State (7:00pm) on Saturday.
