Regular season opens for 49ers Friday evening

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Preseason Conference USA women's soccer favorites, the Charlotte 49ers, will start regular-season action Friday evening against UNC Greensboro. The in-state rivalry is set to begin at 7 p.m. at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

Friday's game will kick-off a season-opening stretch of five-straight away matches for the Niners. It marks a challenging span for head coach John Cullen's squad, which features 10 freshmen entering their first collegiate campaign.

Senior Amanda Jones and junior Monica Trickett, co-captains this fall, have been selected to the Preseason All-Conference USA Team. Trickett was also named as the Preseason Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year.

Eight starters are back from last year's C-USA East Division title-winning club for Cullen's sixth season. The 49ers finished their preseason with a setback to Top 25 Wake Forest before rebounding with a tie at Gardner-Webb behind a goal from senior Sara Trexler.

UNC Greensboro, picked to finish third in the preseason Southern Conference race, features Preseason All-SoCon honoree Georgia Brown for head coach Michael Coll’s coaching debut with the Spartans. He previously was the head coach at UNLV and Saint Francis (Pa.) with an assistant coaching stop at Penn State in between.

UNCG finished 2013 with a 10-6-4 record, including 5-2-3 mark in league action. The Spartans posted a pair of ties to conclude the campaign, including a draw in the SoCon Tournament before being eliminated on penalty kicks.

Friday’s match will mark the seventh in the all-time series with both teams picking up three victories in the previous six meetings. UNCG won the most recent contest, a 2-1 decision in Greensboro Sept. 10, 2010, which also marks the only previous contest during Cullen’s tenure.

Four of the six matchups have been played in Greensboro with both squads earning two wins apiece.
