DESTIN, Fla. –
The Charlotte women’s soccer program has been selected as the host institution for the 2014 Conference USA Championships, as announced by the league office at the annual spring meetings this week in Destin, Fla. It marks the sixth time in school history, and fourth as a Conference USA member, the 49ers will play host to their fellow league members in the hunt for the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
“We’re truly very excited to hear the announcement that we’ll be hosting the tournament,” head coach John Cullen
said. “That’s fantastic news. Once again, our Charlotte 49ers athletic department will step up as it has in the past and put on a quality event and a championship week.
“We look forward to playing in front of Niner Nation, Queen City Army and the Charlotte soccer community, all of which support us very well. And hopefully it will be a memorable week for all of our fans. We look forward to hosting a fantastic week of soccer on our home field.”
The tournament at Transamerica Field will be held November 5-9 after the 14 league members compete for the right to participate during regular-season action.
Charlotte has played host to previous Conference USA Championships in 1996, 2002, 2003 and Atlantic 10 Tournaments in 2007 and 2009. Only the 2007 squad earned the tournament crown on the Transamerica Field surface. The 2002 team entered the tournament week ranked as high as No. 10 in the national polls.
Last season, the 49ers captured the Conference USA East Division regular-season title. The strong showing placed them into the championships as the No. 1 seed from the division and earned the squad an opening-round bye. Charlotte advanced to the semifinals in their first year back in the league.
The Niners return eight starters and 20 letterwinners from last year’s 11-7-2 finish in Cullen’s sixth season in charge of the program. A complete fall schedule will be announced at a later date. 2014-15 Conference USA Championship Schedule (sports sponsored by the Charlotte 49ers)
