EDMUND, Okla. – Charlotte sits three strokes off the leader, Tulsa (+8), posting an 11-over round during the first round of the Conference USA Men's Golf Championship at Oak Tree Country Club on Sunday afternoon. Charlotte is a stroke behind #18 UAB for second.
"Hard to say right now where our round today will stack up but I felt like we played okay," said Head Coach Ryan Cabbage. "Conditions were really tough with some strong winds but I saw a lot of good things out there today. Many positives that we can build on as we move through these next two rounds."
Thomas Rowland and Raoul Menard each led the Niners on day one each posting a one-over 71 after a four hour weather delay to start the tournament. Rowland would start with six-straight pars starting off of hole #10 before trading a bogey and birdie on holes 16 and 17. Rowland would finish his first nine with a par on 18 for an even side of 35. On the second nine, Rowland would get to one-under with a birdie on the par-4 third before finishing with a pair of bogeys on two of his final four holes.
Menard opened up his first round with a birdie on the par-4 tenth before giving it back three holes later on the par-4 13th. After another birdie on 15, Menard struggled to a double bogey on 16 to help end his front nine at one-over 36. Menard would bounce back with an even back nine trading a birdie on three with a final bogey on seven.
Franco Castro and Riley Davenport would round out the Niners team scoring on day one each posting a 74 (+4) and 75 (+5) respectively. Castro began with a birdie on 12 finding himself one-under par through his first seven holes.
Castro’s round would turn the opposite direction after a double on the par-3 17th and bogey on 18 to conclude the front nine at two-over 37. On the front, Castro would mix in two bogies with his seven other pars for his round of 74.
Davenport got off to his own fast start on Sunday after a par on his beginning hole dropping in two-straight birdies on 11 and 12. Over his next four holes, Davenport would give both shots back and one more with three bogies leading to a one-over 36 on the front side. Davenport would struggle with two more bogies on two and three before adding his final birdie on five.
Seth Gandy, Charlotte’s fifth competitor of the championship, carded an opening round 80. Gandy had seven bogies on the day, including a quad on 13, before ending his day with a birdie on nine to set the tone for Monday’s second round.
Charlotte has the early start on Monday morning in round two of the Conference USA Men's Golf Championship with Gandy (T53) teeing things off the back nine at 7:42 am central time. Menard (T8) and Davenport (T28) will follow going off at 7:51 am and 8 am respectively. Castro (T24) and Rowland (T8) will round out the group teeing off the second round at 8:09 am and 8:18 am respectively.
