Men's Golf Stands Pat Taking 12th at Linger Longer

GREENSBORO, Ga. – The Charlotte 49ers men’s golf team finished the 2014 Linger Longer Invitational holding onto 12th place after Sunday’s final round. The final 18 holes was the toughest of the three statistically as the field averaged five-over par with only one team improving their team score in the third round from Saturday’s second round. The Niners posted a 304 to finish the two-day event with a total score of 890 (+16).

Riley Davenport would improve six positions on Sunday finishing tied for 29th after his final round 75 (+3). Davenport mixed in four birdies on the day, two on each side, standing even par through the first seven holes as all Niners started on the back nine. After a stumble on the par-3, 17th and par-5, 18th, Davenport would get two more shots back on his front nine birdies coming on two and six, both par-5’s en route to his 75.

Franco Castro posted Charlotte’s best round of the day with a two-over 74. Starting on 12, Castro was clean to start with six-straight pars before a double on 18 saw the need for birdies on both par-5’s, including his second on six in the three-round tournament, during the front nine. Castro improved eight spots individually to finish tied for 35th overall.

Thomas Rowland, starting on 10, put together an even-par round through 12 holes trading a pair of birdies with bogeys on the back nine. Rowland would birdie the par-5 18th in all three rounds. On the front side, the par-3 4th continued to hurt Rowland with a double on Sunday before a final triple on nine ended his day at 77 (+5). Rowland added all pars in between his mistakes on four and nine.

After his consistent play on Saturday, Sunday proved to be a different story for Raoul Menard limping to a final round 80 (+8). Menard’s start couldn’t have been much better with a birdie on his opening hole, #11, before giving three shots back over the next two holes. Menard would struggle on the front nine but mixed in a pair of birdies including one on the par-5 second. Menard finished the tournament playing the 507-yard par-5 at four-under par after his eagle in round two.

Joe Toland put up the most consistent three rounds of the weekend concluding Sunday’s final round with a six-over 78. Toland started clean with three-straight pars before a birdie on 18 got back one of the three shots surrendered on the previous two holes.

Georgia, ranked 5th in the nation, won the overall team title by 10 shots over Alabama, currently ranked #1 in the country. The Bulldogs three-day total of 837 (-27) was wrapped up by a seven-under 281 on Sunday.

Next up for the Niners will be their annual Irish Creek Invitational hosted in Kannapolis. The two-day, three-round event will take place on Saturday, April 5th and Sunday, April 6th from The Club at Irish Creek. The Niners finished tied for third in last year’s event.
