BOONE, N.C. –
Charlotte pushed went the distance in two singles matches but was unable to overcome Appalachian State Monday, dropping a 4-0 decision to the Mountaineers at the Yonahlossee Racquet Club indoor facility.
The in-state meeting featured only singles action, and once Appalachian State (4-6) locked up the win, the contest was called with the remaining two matchups left unfinished. No doubles matches were played.
Juniors Lisa Grosselius
and Natsuko Takayanagi
each won their respective first set for Charlotte (3-6) but could not sustain the momentum, as their foes picking up the individual position victories.
Grosselius dropped her second set in tiebreaking fashion before Mackenzie LaSure pulled away in the third to post the 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 triumph at the No. 2 spot.
Takayanagi battled through tiebreakers in each of the second and third sets, but in the end, App State’s Gabrielle Wreder captured the 3-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 decision in the No. 3 position.
Sophomore Jessica Pérez
led in the first set of her No. 6 meeting with McKayla Zupan when it was declared unfinished.
The 49ers will look to get back on track when they return home to play host to Mercer at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. Appalachian State 4, Charlotte 0 Singles
