KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Charlotte sophomore Thomas Rowland, playing as an individual, took home top medalist honors by sticking a nine iron within two feet on the first playoff hole at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate wrapping up Tuesday.
Rowland posted a field-best one-under round 70 in Monday’s opening swing befpre a 73 Tuesday got him into a two-way playoff. Rowland topped Lenoir-Rhyne’s John White in the one-hole playoff. The pair of rounds on the 7,099-yard, par 71 layout of Irish Creek lowers Rowland’s scoring average down nearly a half of a stroke to 74.05.
“I’m proud of Thomas and happy for him to get his win today,” stated Head Coach Ryan Cabbage afterwards. “I think he would admit that he didn’t play well throughout the course of the day, but to refocus and come out to hit such a wonderful shot to within a couple of feet on the first playoff hole was nice to see.”
