HUMBLE, Tex. – The Charlotte 49ers men’s golf team saved their best round for last firing a four-under 284 as a team to finish 8th overall at the 2014 Bayou City Collegiate Championship hosted by the University of Houston. Franco Castro, Raoul Menard and Riley Davenport each shot two-under 70’s in the final round. Charlotte finished five-over as a team for the three-day tournament at 869. Houston won the team title shooting an 836.

Castro, starting on #10 in the shotgun start, started with a bogey on #12 before reeling off birdies on #13, #16 and on #2. All three of those birdies were Castro’s firsts on those specific holes during the tournament.  After losing a shot on #3, Castro finished with five pars in six holes adding his final birdie on the eighth. Castro’s improving rounds of 72-71-70 put him tied for 15th at 213 (-3) for the tournament.

Menard would put together a solid 18 holes around the 6,967-yard, par 72 layout of the Golf Club of Houston starting with a par on his opening hole #11, before quickly getting into red numbers with a birdie on the par-4 12th. After a brief stumble posting a bogey on the par-3 13th, Menard regained the shot minutes later dropping a birdie on the par-5 15th. Making the turn onto the front side, Menard would record seven-straight pars after a bogey on #1 before finishing with back-to-back birdies on #9 and #10. Those final birdies propelled Menard to a T-21 finish at 71-74-70=215 (-1).

After a pair of two-over rounds on Friday and Saturday, Davenport took four fewer shots on Sunday dropping a half-dozen birdies during his outing. Also starting on #11, Davenport traded shots with a birdie on #14 and a bogey on #15 while doing the same, in order, on #17 and #18. Making his turn to the front nine, Davenport turned it on with three-straight birdies, all par fours, to get to three-under for the day. A miscue on five led to a double bogey until a final birdie on the par-5 eighth got him to his two-under for the day.

John Boehme wrapped up his weekend with a two-over 74 recovery nicely on the front nine staying clean with a pair of birdies to go along with seven pars. One of those birdies would come on the par-4 first for the second-consecutive round.  Seth Gandy rounded out team play on Sunday with an 80.

Charlotte will now have three weeks off before their next tournament on March 10-11th. The 49ers will travel down to Auburn, Ala. for the Auburn Tiger Shootout during the second week of March.
