|Niner Softball Wraps up Green and White|
Charlotte, N.C.- In the final day of the Green and White tournament, Charlotte fell in game one against Robert Morris 7-0 and bounced back to beat Cleveland State 9-1 in the night cap on Sunday afternoon.
Hayley Lewis led the way for the Niners going 3-7 from the plate. Jackie Kleinsmith went 4-7 from the plate with four RBI. Mackenzie Hauser took the loss in game one tossing 3.1 innings allowing seven runs off 10 hits. Lexi Betancourt picked up the win in the night cap tossing a complete game giving up one run off five hits and struck out eight.
Robert Morris (9-4) started the game off with a lead-off home run to center field by Tess Apke. The Colonials loaded the bases in the first inning with two walks and an error but left them stranded.
The Colonials picked up a big inning in the bottom of the third picking up four runs off six hits. Pinch hitter Lauren Hackett delivered with a two out bases loaded single to left field scoring two to push the lead to 3-0. Tess Apke followed Hackett with a double to right center pushing across the final two runs of the inning.
Robert Morris put two more runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning for a 7-0 lead. Haileigh Stocks drew a lead-off walk. Ashley Gerhart took a 1-0 pitch over the left center field wall for a two-run home run.
Charlotte was kept out of the hit column by RMU's starter Nicole Sleith (5-2) until the bottom of the fourth inning. Natalie Capone picked up an infield single and moved to second on the overthrow for the first Niner on the bases. Jackie Kleinsmith pushed Capone to third on the sacrifice bunt where Capone was stranded for the best look at a run of the game.
Hayley Lewis picked up the other Niner hit with a double to left center in the bottom of the sixth inning. Chelsea Ingersoll was the final runner on base for the Niners drawing a walk in the sixth inning after a seven pitch at-bat.
Nicole Sleith picked up the win for the Colonials tossing seven shutout innings allowing two hits and striking out eight. Mackenzie Hauser (0-2) picked up the loss. Chelsea Lisikatos pitched in relief tossing 3.2 hitless innings and walking two.
The night cap was a different story for the Niners (4-5) picking up nine runs off 14 hits on its way to a 9-1 rout of Cleveland State. Chelsea Lisikatos and Jackie Kleinsmith picked up multi-hit games going 3-3 and 4-5 respectively.
Hayley Lewis led off the second inning with a five pitch walk. Chelsea Ingersoll doubled to the wall in center field sending Lewis to third putting two runners in scoring position. Jessie Fennell drew a walk to load the bases for Courtney Carroll. Carroll roped a 3-1 pitch back up the middle plating Lewis and Ingersoll for the first runs of the game.
Charlotte put another crooked number on the board in the top of the third inning for a 4-0 lead. Lisikatos led off the inning with a double to the left field fence. Jessica Plemmons hit her second home run of the season sending a 2-1 pitch out of the park.
The Niners scored two more runs in the top of the fourth inning for a comfortable 6-0 lead thanks to three hits and a Viking error. Kleinsmith laced a 1-1 pitch up the middle scoring Carroll and Capone for a two RBI single. Carroll walked to lead off the inning, Capone reached on an error and moved up to second. Lisikatos and Lewis singled loading the bases but left them juiced to end the inning on a fly out.
The Vikings and Niners traded runs in the fifth inning. Charlotte scored on a single by Kleinsmith giving the Niners a 7-0. Cleveland State (4-4) put a run on the board in the bottom half of the inning with a lead-off home run by Cynthia Woodard to left field.
The Niner attack struck again in the top of the seventh inning scoring the final two runs of the game. Paige Wall led off the inning with an eight pitch walk. Capone slapped the first pitch she saw for a bunt single to the pitcher. Wall and Capone tagged up on a Samantha Slade fly out. Kleinsmith picked up her fourth RBI of the game with a base hit to left. Plemmons sacrifice fly to right field scoring Capone from third.
Betancourt (4-1) picked up her fourth win of the season tossing seven innings giving up one run off five hits and striking out eight. Susan Knight (1-3) picked up the loss for the Vikings with a short outing pitching three innings giving up four runs off seven hits. Sara Shields pitched in relief going four innings giving up five runs off seven hits.
Charlotte finished the Green and White 2-2 dropping both meetings with Robert Morris. Charlotte returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 4 pm on the road at Elon.
Jackie Kleinsmith went 8-13 from the plate in the tournament with a home run and six RBI. Hayley Lewis extended her hitting streak to seven games with a double against RMU and going 2-4 against Cleveland State. Lexi Betancourt picked up both wins in the tournament going 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA allowing three runs in 13 innings and striking out 17. Coach Aimee DeVos is five wins away from 500 career wins.
