The three-day, 54-hole Bayou City Collegiate Classic is hosted by Houston and Rice at The Golf Club of Houston, Friday through Sunday, Feb. 21-23. Six of the teams in the 15-team field are ranked in Golfstat’s top 30.
"We are very excited to get started with the spring season," said third-year head coach Ryan Cabbage. "The Golf Club of Houston is a wonderful golf course. The PGA Tour guys will be there in just a few weeks, themselves. That alone speaks to the quality of the golf course. The field is very strong once again this year with a bunch of top 25 teams. It will be a good test for our guys. We will need to play well and I think we will."
Cabbage, who has led the 49ers to a pair of NCAA Regionals in his first two years, will go with a lineup that includes two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Raoul Menard and senior stroke average leader Franco Castro. Castro owns a 71.47 stroke average through the fall campaign while Menard, who took medalist honors at the last two A-10 Championships, owns a 72.50 stroke average. Sophomores John Boehme and Riley Davenport and freshman Seth Gandy round out the 49ers lineup.
The tournament field includes the 49ers, co-hosts Houston and Rice as well as Arkansas, Baylor, Houston Baptist, Lamar, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State, New Mexico State, South Carolina, Texas, USF and UTSA. The top 30 ranked teams in the field are #14 USF, #15 Houston, #21 Arkansas, #29 South Carolina and #30 Baylor. The 49ers are ranked 68th in the latest Golfstat rankings.
Charlotte, which won seven A-10 Championships in their eight years in the league, return to Conference USA, this year. C-USA schools in the field include the 49ers, Louisiana Tech, Rice and UTSA.
Charlotte will be paired with New Mexico State and Mississippi State for Friday's first round. The 49ers tee times will begin at 9:45 a.m. CST.
