DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Charlotte women’s tennis team opened its spring dual match campaign with a 4-1 setback to Radford Friday evening in Davidson, N.C. The neutral-site contest was the first of the season for both programs.
The 49ers earned their lone point in singles at the No. 3 position, as junior Natsuko Takayanagi defeated the Highlanders’ Meg Napolitano in straight sets 6-4, 6-0.
Freshman Victoria Pahlett made her collegiate debut for Charlotte (0-1) and picked up a first-set win before dropping a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 1 singles slot by a 15-13 margin. Junior Lisa Grosselius and sophomore Tyler Baker also went to third-set tiebreakers against their opponents at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions, respectively, but each time the Radford (1-0) foe prevailed.
The Niners’ No. 3 slotted doubles pairing of sophomore Jessica Pérez and freshman Macy Vonderschmidt was locked into a 6-6 deadlock with Taylor Fay and Gisela Garcia, forcing a tiebreaker under the new experimental rules. Charlotte’s duo held a 3-1 edge when the match was called due to the other two doubles matches finishing ahead of it.
The 49ers will look to bounce back Saturday when they continue action at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem in a 4 p.m. first serve.
