49ers Face North Texas In Halton Arena, Saturday

The Charlotte 49ers (11-5, Conference USA: 2-1) play North Texas (10-7, C-USA: 1-2) in Halton Arena, Saturday, January 18. The game will be broadcast by Time Warner Texas and Niner fans can watch the game in the Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro and Wilmington areas on Time Warner Cable Channel 520.  

The Charlotte 49ers will host families from Levine Children's Hospital as part of the annual Levine Children's Hospital/Stephen Doughton, Jr. Foundation Night.

Current and former Levine Children's Hospital patients are being invited to game by the 49ers coaches and team to enjoy the NCAA Division I men's basketball game and participate in pre-game festivities including a facility and locker room tour, a meeting with Norm the Niner, and a hospitality function.

Levine Children's Hospital and the Stephen Doughton, Jr. Foundation have partnered for the event to raise funds to assist in the fight against pediatric cancer. Donations can be made at the Stephen Doughton, Jr. Foundation table located in the food court of Halton Arena on the day of the game or online by clicking this link.

Last time out, Charlotte defeated Tulsa, 90-86, in overtime in their Conference USA home opener, Thursday, January 16. The 49ers rallied from eight points down with 1:16 left in the second half with a 13-5 run to close the second half sending the game into overtime. Pierria Henry scored 18 points including the 49ers final six points of regulation. Henry also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out eight assists. Denzel Ingram scored 17 points off the bench. Ingram went 5-for-6 from three-point line. Terrence Williams scored 14 points. Mike Thorne recorded his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Willie Clayton recorded his 14th straight double-figure scoring game with 10 points. Clayton also grabbed eight rebounds. Ben Cherry rounded out the 49ers double-figure scorers with 10 points.

Shawn Lester has scored in double-figures in 12 of Charlotte’s 16 games this season. Lester (12.3 ppg) leads the 49ers in scoring. Henry (12.0 ppg), Clayton (11.8 ppg), Pierria Henry (11.6 ppg), Williams (11.4 ppg) and Thorne (10.7 ppg) round out the 49ers double-figure scorers. Ingram averages 9.9 points per game. Henry is second in Conference USA in steals per game at 2.40. Clayton is tied for third in Conference USA in rebounding at 9.0 boards per game. Clayton leads Conference USA in offensive rebounds (4.4 per game). Ingram has knocked down 10 threes in the last two games. Ingram leads Conference USA in three-point field goal percentage (53.2%). Ben Cherry has knocked down 29 threes in the last 14 games. Cherry is second in Conference USA in three-point field goal percentage (50.0%). Clayton leads Conference USA in field goal percentage (63.2%). Marcus Bryan has given the 49ers solid production off the bench this season so far. Last week, Bryan grabbed a career-high seven rebounds off the bench at UTEP.

North Texas enters the game off an 80-65 road win at Marshall, Thursday. Alzee Williams leads North Texas in scoring at 12.8 points per game. Jordan Williams leads North Texas in rebounding at 6.2 boards per game. Jordan Williams is second on the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game.

Saturday’s game will mark the third meeting between the two teams. The series is tied at one game apiece. North Texas defeated Charlotte, 90-72, in their last meeting which came in Halton Arena, November 12, 2006. Former 49ers standout De’Angelo Alexander led the 49ers with 25 points in that game. Charlotte defeated North Texas, 86-69, in Oklahoma City, December 29, 1975.
