|Two qualify for finals at UAB Blazer Invitational|
Birmingham, Ala.- The Charlotte 49ers finish day one of the UAB Blazer Invitational with two qualifiers and three all-time performances. Juanita Leto and LeRoy Rouse advance to the finals tomorrow with qualifying performances.
“Pretty solid day for a meet, unlike one we’ve had before. This is not only our first meet after the holiday but also our first meet of the season. So given the circumstances, the first day has been productive,” said head coach Robert Olesen.
LeRoy Rouse etched his name into the all-time performance list with a 60 meter time of 6.83, fast enough for seventh all-time. Rouse finished fourth overall in his section.
Chris Tate did not qualify in the 300 meter but finished 10th overall with a time of 34.73. Tate’s performance is third all-time. Brian Hamilton and Chris Boyd finished with times of 35.35 and 35.66 respectively.
Trey McRae finished tied for eighth in the high jump clearing 2.0 meters (6’6.75). Anthony Campbell finished eighth in the triple jump with a jump of 14.26m (46’9.5). Briauna Jones jumped 12.04m (39’6) for an eighth place finish in the triple jump. Freshman Dejah Hayes finished 11th overall with a leap of 11.96m (39’3) in the triple jump.
Katrina Wright coming off a record setting season last season finished 11th overall with a hurl of 15.84m (51’11.5) in the 20lb. weight throw. Michael Pecchia and Kerrick Williams competed in the 35 lb. weight throw with throws of 14.76m and 15.02m. Pecchia’s performance was ninth all-time.
Charlotte distance runners finished well in the 1000 meters grabbing five top 10s on the men’s side. The 49ers were led by Ben Sterett, Michael Tamayo and Nick Rotz. The trio finished 3rd-5th. Sterett ran a 2:35.47 with Tamayo (2:35.62) and Rotz (2:35.64) not far behind. Getisso Dentamo did not finish far behind the 49er leaders finishing in seventh with a time of 2:35.69. Zach Greth (2:36.23) finished ninth overall. Marcus Rinehardt, Michael Colven and Eleazar Garcia finished 18th, 20th, and 21st respectively.
Ashleigh Handchen (3:09.75) led the 49ers in the women’s 1000 meters with a tenth place finish. Carolina Casin-Silva finished behind Handchen in 11th with a time of 3:11.01. Lauren Pollard (3:14.91) finished in 17th.
Charlotte will compete tomorrow in day two of the UAB Blazer Invitational. A number of 49ers did not compete on Friday night with several events scheduled for Saturday. The complete results were not available at the time of the release.
