Charlotte, NC – Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer senior midfielder Tyler Gibson was chosen as one of the 50 college seniors who are invited to participate in the 2014 adidas MLS Player Combine, January 10-14 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
The initial player list was determined by a panel of Division I college coaches, representing all conferences, who nominated and voted for players in conjunction with MLS representatives. These players will be joined by generation adidas players, additional collegiate players from NCAA Division II and III schools, NAIA schools, and Division I alternates.
This past season, Gibson played an integral role in helping the 49ers capture the Conference USA Tournament title and earn a national seed to the NCAA Tournament. Gibson was named to the Conference USA All-Tournament team after scoring the game-winning goal in the 49ers 1-0 victory over Tulsa in the Championship game. He also earned third-team Capital One Academic All-American honors a couple of weeks ago.
Gibson, who was named to the Hermann Award Watch list as a junior and a senior, was a three-time first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection. He was also a two-time first-team NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic region selection.
Last year, former 49ers standout Donnie Smith participated in the MLS Combine. He was later picked in the second round of Major League Soccer’s SuperDraft by the New England Revolution. Smith played for the Revolution this past season. In 2012, former 49ers standouts Evan James and Charles Rodriguez participated in the MLS Combine. James was the first pick the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft by the Montreal Impact. Rodriguez was picked in the third round of the MLS Supplemental Draft by DC United.
