Charlotte, N.C.- The Charlotte 49ers men’s and women’s cross country teams head to Charlottesville, Va. to compete in the NCAA Southeast Regionals on Friday.
The 49ers are coming off a middle of the pack performance at the 2013 Conference USA Cross Country Championships in Denton, Texas. The women’s team finished fifth overall as a team while the men’s team finished sixth. “We had our bet meet of the year. It was our best collective meet to date,” said Coach Ed Schlichter.
Charlotte was led by All-Conference honoree Maraya Slatter at the conference championships for the women’s side and Ben Sterett for the men’s. Charlotte also had strong showings from Kim Spano and Morgan Richards for the women’s. Zach Greth and Ross Roberson helped the 49ers men’s place as well.
The 2013 NCAA Southeast Regionals is being hosted by the University of Virginia. Last year the Southeast Regionals were hosted by Charlotte at McAlpine Creek Park.
“We have had our best workouts this week. I think we are a better 6k team rather than a 5k team on the women’s side.”
Charlotte will take to the course starting with the men’s 10k race at 12:00pm sharp followed by the women’s 6k race at 1:15pm. “I think we have a couple individuals on both sides that could go in there and get a bit scrappy and come out with an All-Region performance in the top 25.”
“I think we have everything working for us. Everyone working together, we can make that special run and be in that top 15.”
“We are ready, we are excited and we will see what happens on Friday.”
