|Benchmarks Breached in 3-2 Volleyball win at ECU|
Senior captain Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) collected a career-high 26 kills and sophomore libero Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) had 36 digs, two shy of her own school record, as Charlotte volleyball won its second-straight Conference USA match 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 25-18, 22-25, 15-13) at East Carolina Sunday. It was Charlotte’s lone league match of the week and keeps their hopes of making the conference tournament alive with two matches left in the season.
Charlotte is now 12-15 overall, 2-10 in C-USA and has beaten the Pirates four straight times. ECU is 13-17, 3-9 in the league.
Videmsek became the 18th player in school history to break 1,000 kills (now at 1,001) and also added 14 digs to log her team-best ninth double-double of the season. Hovey’s dig total pushed her season total to 509, making her just the second player in program history to get to 500 digs in a season. Former Niner and all-time digs leader Carly Romberg did the feat in consecutive seasons (2007 & 2008) when she earned back-to-back Conference Libero of the Year awards. Hovey leads Conference USA with a digs-per-set average of 5.14 in 2013.
The 49ers barely outperformed the Pirates in side out percentage (52 to 49) and outhit ECU .197 to .154 in the contest.
The 49ers had a 5-0 lead in the fifth and final set, only to watch ECU storm back with a 4-0 run to make the set close. The Pirates actually got up in the set 10-9, but a Niners kill and a service ace from setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) put Charlotte back up 11-10. ECU tied the mat at 12, but Charlotte did not again lose the lead, as ECU committed a pair of errors in the last three points as Charlotte took their first road league win of the season.
Held had 58 assists and eclipsed the 1,000-assist mark for the season, the 22nd setter in school history to get to four-digit assists. She moved up to 21st on the list, now with 1,040 assists in 2013.
Charlotte had 10-kill performances from senior Taylor Cannon (Elizabeth City, N.C. / Camtech HS) and sophomore Carly Ochs (Town and Country, Mo. / St. Joseph’s Academy). The total was a season-high for Ochs. Junior Laura Cantrell (Millers Creek, N.C. / West Wilkes HS) set career highs with 13 digs and five blocks. Freshman Morgan Barker (Holly Springs, N.C.) also added 13 digs.
The 49ers will host Senior Night this Friday against Southern Miss. before heading on the road to close out the regular season Sunday at UAB. Friday night’s match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., but follows a 4 p.m. men’s basketball contest, so that time could be fluid.
