Charlotte, N.C.-  One person, three nations.  A Charlotte track and field alumnus, Abe Morlu, has competed for three different nations during the world championships.

Abe Morlu is a native of Boone, N.C. but moved to the United States from Liberia.  Morlu graduated from UNC Charlotte in 2003 with a bachelors’ degree in Spanish and Political Science.  Morlu is eighth in the 49ers all-time list for outdoor track running the 200 meter in 21.37 and 48.12 in the 400 meter.  Morlu is ninth in the 100m (10.60).  Abe also sits in the top ten in the indoor track list as well; sitting at sixth all-time in the 55 meter and 60 meter, eighth in the 200 meter and seventh in the 400 meter.

Morlu qualified for the US National Bobsled team for the upcoming world championships.  Prior to him making the US National team, Morlu ran track for his birth country (Liberia) running in four world championships: 2001, 2003, 2009 and 2010.  He qualified for two Olympics running in 2000 (Sydney) and 2004 (Athens).

Switzerland’s bobsled national team was Morlu’s next stop.  Morlu helped the Swiss in the 2012 and 2013 world championships.  In 2013, Morlu took second in the two-man, fourth in the four-man and fifth in the team event.  During the 2012 world championships he won the two-man event.

Charlotte track and field coach Robert Olesen was a member of the 1998 United States Olympic Bobsled team, helping the U.S. finish seventh in the two-man bobsled at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan.  En route to this accomplishment, his sled teams accumulated eleven world cup medals, including two bronze at the 1997 World Championship, an Olympic Trials championship and a number of U.S. Championships.  His tenure with the team lasted from 1994-1998, during which he also earned the 1995-96 USOC Athlete of the Year Award in the sport of bobsled and was a member of the 1996-97 USOC two-man bobsled team of the year.

Morlu will participate in the North American Cup November 11 in Calgary, Canada for the US National Bobsled team before participating in the first World Cup race November 25.
