Charlotte, N.C.-Hot conditions played a factor in the running of Charlotte men’s and women’s cross country teams in Bethlehem, Pa. at the Paul Short Run on Saturday afternoon.

Charlotte did not score well because of conditions finishing towards the back of the field as a team.  The 49ers men’s squad placed 40th overall and the women’s placed 46th.  “Today we didn’t have much success in the heat,” said Coach Ed Schlichter.  “It was about 20 degrees warmer than what we’ve become used to the past few weeks. I think we were caught off guard a little by that.”

The women’s team looking to build off the second place finish last week at the Charlotte Invitational was led by sophomore Morgan Richards followed by Kim Spano and Carolina Casin-Silva.  Charlotte’s 2-7 runners were within 40 seconds of each other.

The 49ers men’s squad were led by juniors Zach Greth, Ben Sterett, Joseph Cotto, red-shirt senior Ross Roberson and sophomore Michael Tamayo.  The 49ers men’s top five finished within 43 seconds of each other.

Coach Ed Schlichter talked about that time gap before the meet stating, “A forty second time gap, it is crucial within cross country.”

“The women had great splits at the 3k mark, but think with the combination of running hard last weekend and the extremely tough conditions with the weather, we fell short of our goals.”

With the extreme conditions on the course, the meet was cut short due to heat.  “I’m glad that we were able to make it out of the meet without any lasting issues for our athletes.”  “I think this will be a mental tough note moving forward for our following meets.”

“We’ll put our attention to the next meet and see if we can get a little more fortunate in regards to conditions.  We’re in better shape than our performance showed.  We will stay calm and carry on.”

Charlotte look to rebound as they stay in Charlotte for the Royals Challenge hosted by Queens College, Oct. 11 at McAlpine Creek Park.
