Dig Pink week is upon us! The Charlotte volleyball program focuses some of its attention on raising awareness and money for breast cancer research with the 12th annual Dig Pink match, which takes place Friday night, the 18th, against Tulsa at Halton Arena.  In two of the past three seasons, the 49ers raised more money than any other college or university in the national campaign, last year netting $14,045 for the cause.

The month-long online jersey auction is live on the Web site. Click here to bid on one of the game-worn jerseys in the match. Winners will receive the jersey after the auction ends at the end of the month.

Wednesday the 16th, the annual “Jail and Bail” will take place on the steps of the Student Union. Select campus celebrities will be placed in a holding area out front, soliciting donations to get “released” from volleyball custody. Fans who want a local donation option can join the team at this event from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The next night, Thursday the 17th, will be Beer Glass Night at the University Flying Saucer (9605 N. Tryon St., across from the street from Jerry Richardson Football Stadium. Fans 21 and over can visit the taproom that night and purchase the special pink glass for four dollars, with a pair of breweries, Harpoon and Starr Hill, that are donating to the cause. There will be some big prizes being raffled off at the event, with a five-dollar ticket gaining entry into those drawings. Anyone buying 10 or more raffle tickets with get a free t-shirt or other goodies that night.

The volleyball team will hold its first cornhole tournament on Friday the 18th, starting at 5 p.m. For $20 per team, members receive a t-shirt and play in a tournament in the Student Activity Center, leading up the finals, which will be played on the court at intermission of the match. The winner will win two tickets to the Carolina Panthers home game on Sunday the 20th against St. Louis.

There will be a pink t-shirt giveaway to fans entering the match, as supplies last, and donations will be solicited during the match.

The 49ers set the school record with 1,813 fans in attendance last season for the Dig Pink match.

Dig Pink started as Dig for the Cure at Charlotte in the 2002 season by former head coach Lisa Marston. She solicited coaches at Conference USA schools to join the cause and did the same when Charlotte moved to the Atlantic 10 Conference in 2005. Marston and current head coach Chris Redding took the program and others with it over to the Side-Out Foundation in the Dig Pink effort. Marston continues to serve on the Board of Directors of the Side-Out Foundation (www.side-out.org). In total, with Charlotte and hundreds of programs across the country, Dig Pink has raised over $6M for breast cancer research and education.

Charlotte’s donate link is active by clicking here and fans are encouraged to support the cause to help eradicate this terrible disease that impacts a large percentage of families across all ages, races, creeds and denominations.
