|Volleyball Sweeps Gardner-Webb to Get 10th Win|
Charlotte volleyball completed its non-conference portion of the 2013 schedule with 10 wins after a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-19, 25-14) of visiting Gardner-Webb Tuesday night at Halton Arena. The 49ers are 10-5, with eight sweeps in the first half of the season. Charlotte has won nine of 11 matches, and 22 of its last 25 sets played. Gardner-Webb slips to 6-9 overall. Charlotte has never lost to Gardner-Webb (11-0) in volleyball.
Charlotte broke open the match in the first with an 11-0 run, powered by three of her match-high five aces from freshman defensive specialist Morgan Barker (Holly Springs, N.C.). When her serve ended in the first, the Niners led 20-10.
GWU made a run of its own, including a stretch of six straight en route to tying the set at 23. A pair of kills from fellow freshman Claire Kreuz (Boerne, Tex. / Samuel Champion HS) closed out the set for Charlotte.
It was senior captain Amanda Videmsek’s (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) turn in the second. With the score 5-4 GWU, she served for five points in a row and logged five kills of her own in the second frame as the 49ers pushed tempo and made only two attack errors to lead 2-0 into the intermission.
In the third set, Barker again served as Charlotte put together a 5-0 run after losing the first two points of the set. Charlotte finished the stanza on a 9-1 run to secure the match.
The 49ers held the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a .138 attack percentage, due to 19 GWU errors and an amazing 56 digs in the three-set. That was a season-high total for a three-set match for the 49ers. Sophomore libero Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) logged an astounding 26 in the three sets, setting a new school record and raising her season average by nearly a quarter of a dig per set. She was already second in Conference USA with a five digs-per-set average at the start of the week.
Videmsek tied for the match-high total of 14 kills with GWU’s Taylor Lillard, who had the match’s only double-double with 10 digs. Kreuz added 10 kills, tying Erin Anderson of Gardner-Webb. Videmsek was a part of seven of the team’s 10 blocks in the match. She ended the match with 300 career blocks, 12th-most in school history. Her 272 blocks are 10th-best in program history.
Charlotte sophomore setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) had 34 assists, with Barker adding 13 digs. GWU’s Anna Pashkova led her squad with 16 digs.
The 49ers begin C-USA play this weekend with a trip to Miami. The 49ers play at FIU Friday night at 7 p.m. before a noon Sunday match at Florida Atlantic. Charlotte is just one of four of the 15 C-USA programs that have reached double-digit wins heading into league action.
