After competing in Japan for the first action of 2013-14, the Charlotte golf team played its first round stateside Sunday in the opening round of the Rees Jones Invitational, hosted by South Carolina in Daufuskie Island, S.C. The 49ers sit tied for third at two-over par (291), tied with Liberty at the par-72, 7,380 yard Haig Point Club.
Junior Raoul Menard (Ange-Gardier, Quebec City / Beaulieu) had the best round of the day for the 49ers and sits in a three-way tie for second with his two-under par round of 70 Sunday. He was just one of eight players to finish under par on the rain-soaked course. He started with three bogeys on his first four holes, with one birdie mixed in, but dropped in four birdies and 10 pars to finish out the round and post the low score.
Charlotte sophomore Dan Hendry (Dubai, United Arab Emirates / Dubai College) was second-best for the Niners, with three bogeys and two birdies for a one-over 73 and a tie for 16th overall. He logged 13 pars in the round.
A pair of 49ers turned in the third-best rounds for Charlotte at two-over 74. Sophomore Daniel Brantley (Asheboro, N.C.) had four-straight birdies near the end of his round to tie for 23rd, while senior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU) birdied his first two holes starting on the back nine and posted birdies in two of his final six holes for the 74.
Freshman Seth Gandy (Huntersville, N.C. / Hough HS) posted a three-over 75 for his first round of collegiate golf in the United States. He had 12 pars to go with two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey to tie for 32nd individually.
The 49ers will start from the first tee Monday morning at 9:40 a.m. and will be paired with UNC Wilmington and Kennesaw State for the middle of the three-round event.
