Charlotte senior middle hitter Taylor Cannon (Elizabeth City, N.C. / Camtech HS) started 8-for-8 and finished with a match-high 13 kills as the 49ers volleyball squad won its sixth-straight match in sweep fashion (25-18, 25-18, 25-21) over visiting Tennessee State in the fourth match of the 49er Invite at Halton Arena. Both teams have one match left for the weekend later this afternoon. The Tigers (2-7) will take on South Carolina State, while the 49ers (9-4) play Elon for the tournament title.
Cannon finished with 13 kills on 18 attempts and only two errors for a .611 attack percentage, the third time she has hit over .600 for a match this season. The 49ers put together a .317 attack percentage as a team in the victory. All six wins in the streak have been sweeps, giving Charlotte 18 set victories in a row, two off the school record of 20, set in 1978.
Sophomore setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) recorded 36 assists in the three sets. She added seven blocks and five digs in the all-around performance. She and senior captain Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) accounted for five of the team’s eight total blocks as a tandem on the left side of the front line defensively. Videmsek had 11 kills and six digs for Charlotte.
Sophomore libero Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) posted 20 digs in the three sets, pushing her season total to 228 and an average over five per set.
The 49ers and Phoenix have both defeated South Carolina State and Tennessee State to play for the tournament title tonight at 7 p.m.
