Charlotte volleyball rides a four-match winning streak into the first home matches of the year, the 49er Invite, Friday and Saturday in Halton Arena. The 49ers will take on South Carolina State Friday at 7 p.m. Saturday, Charlotte will face Tennessee State at 12:30 and Elon at 7 p.m. All four teams will play three matches in the weekend, starting with Elon and Tennessee State at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
Charlotte’s home opener will be Beach Night, with Charlotte visors given away to fans on their way in the arena, while supplies last.
Charlotte has swept the last four opponents it has played, also winners of six of the last seven matches played this season. The 49ers are 7-4 entering the weekend, sporting a .229 attack percentage, fifth-best among the 15 Conference USA volleyball schools. The 49ers are third in kills per set and fourth in assists per set in conference entering the weekend.
Individually, sophomore setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) sits second in the league with a 11.31 assists-per-set average. Her recent play has enabled the increase in offensive production for the squad. Another reason for the current run continues to be the defensive play from libero Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse). Hovey is third in Conference USA with a 4.95 digs-per-set average. She set the school record two weekends ago with 38 digs in a match and has an amazing 20 digs in the three-set win at North Carolina A&T on Tuesday.
S.C. State, Charlotte’s first opponent, enters the weekend 1-9, with a home win in the ledger. Tennessee State sits at 2-5, while Elon is 5-7, winning three of its last four.
