After a weekend sweep at the Spartan Invitational in Norfolk, Va., the Charlotte volleyball program heads to Greensboro to tangle with North Carolina A&T Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The 49ers have won five of six matches and sit at 6-4 overall on the season. A&T is 1-9.
Senior Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) earned Tournament MVP honors with her leadership on the floor in the sweep. She produced 31 kills, 19 digs and 13 blocks in nine victorious sets. Videmsek leads the 49ers offensively with 118 kills, averaging 3.28 per set so far this season. She is currently tenth in Conference-USA in points per set, at 3.88 in 2013.
Fellow senior Taylor Cannon (Elizabeth City, N.C. / Camtech HS) earned All-Tournament Team honors after her 29 kills and seven blocks over the weekend. Cannon is third on the squad with 96 kills, adding 30 blocks so far in 10 matches.
Charlotte has three players ranked fourth or better in the league individual statistics. Sophomore Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) sits third in C-USA with 4.81 digs per set, while classmate Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central) is also third in C-USA at 11.14 assists per set. Freshman Claire Kreuz (Boerne, Tex. / Samuel Champion HS) is fourth in the league with 0.37 aces per set for the year.
The 49ers are fourth in the league in digs per set, fifth in assists and kills per set and sixth of 15 league teams in blocks, hitting percentage and win-loss percentage.
The Aggies have dropped their last five matches, with a lone win at home to Alabama State on September 6.
After starting the year with 11 away from home, ending Tuesday, Charlotte plays in Halton Arena for the first home matches of the season in the 49er Invite. Charlotte hosts South Carolina State Friday night at 7 p.m. in the home opener, adding matches with Tennessee State Saturday at 12:30 and finishing with a 7 p.m. match that night against Elon to conclude the tournament. Charlotte plays its lone weeknight match of the season the following Tuesday against Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m.
