BIRMINGHAM, AL – Despite playing a majority of the game a man down, the 21st-ranked Charlotte 49ers (2-1-1) tied 8th-ranked UAB (3-0-1), 0-0, in double overtime on the road in the UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic. The 49ers finished the game with a 14-8 advantage in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

“I am proud of our guys,” Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. “We played over 70 minutes a man down on the road at the eighth-ranked team in the country and to not allow a goal is incredible. We played our hearts out tonight. Over the first 30 minutes of the game, we played some of the best soccer that we have played since I have been at Charlotte. We played a majority of the game with only nine players and we still looked dangerous. I am so proud of our effort.”

Giuseppe Gentile started the 49ers offensive attack with a shot that was saved by UAB’s goalkeeper Raphael Ville just 52 seconds into the game.

Tyler Gibson, Brandt Bronico, Will Mayhew, Anthony Perez and Gentile had shots in the first half but their shots were either high, blocked or stopped by UAB’s Ville.

In the 31st minute, Charlotte’s Bronico and UAB’s Moses Adeniran were both issued red cards so each team would now play with 10 men. In the 37th minute, Charlotte’s Biko Bradnock-Brennan was issued a red card so the 49ers would play the rest of the game with only nine players.

Despite playing a man down for a majority of the game, the 49ers defense was stout as they limited UAB to only one shot on goal which came in the 103rd minute.

In the second half, Charlotte’s Thomas Allen, David Mayer, Kyle Parker, Mayhew and Gentile each took shots that were either high, wide, blocked or stopped by UAB’s Ville. In the 80th minute, Gentile nearly scored but his shot was stopped by UAB’s goalkeeper Ville. Gentile finished the game with a game-high four shots.

In each overtime period, Aidan Kirkbride had shots for the 49ers but both of his shots were either blocked or wide.

Charlotte returns to action when they conclude play in the UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic against Memphis, Sunday, September 15 at 1 pm.
