CHARLOTTE, NC – The 15th-ranked Charlotte 49ers (1-1) fell to UNCG (2-0), 1-0, in their home opener. This marked the 49ers first loss in a home opener since 1999.
“Tough one for us,” Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. “UNCG came into the game with a plan to disrupt us. It is tough to lose 1-0 on the other team’s only shot on goal but that is college soccer. We just need to dust ourselves off and get ready for Friday’s game.”
UNCG scored the game’s only goal when Justin Jones’ throw-in found David Reitttinger on the left side of the goal. Reittinger then put a scoring shot into the lower left corner of the goal in the eighth minute.
The 49ers best scoring chance came when Anthony Perez blasted a shot from about 25 yards out that banged off the postin the 33rd minute.
In the 71st minute, the 49ers Will Mayhew nearly scored the game-tying goal when his shot from the right corner of the box went just wide left of the goal.
The 49ers finished the game with a 15-4 advantage in shots. Giuseppe Gentile finished the game with five shots. Brandt Bronico added four shots to the 49ers attack. Mayhew and Perez each had two shots in the game.
Charlotte returns to action when they play 11th-ranked Coastal Carolina on the road, Friday, September 6 at 7 pm.
