|Niners hit the road for first away test|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte women’s soccer team, off to its best start since 2009, will look to continue the momentum when it travels to Elon, N.C., to face Elon at 7 p.m. Sunday in the first away match of the campaign.
The 49ers have opened the season 3-0, picking up victories in each of their home games thus far. Charlotte has outscored its opponents 4-1 during the stretch, keeping the foes off the board for the first 206:25 of the campaign.
The stout defensive effort has translated into goals in all phases of the match, including a pair of game winners by preseason Conference USA Player to Watch Amanda Jones. Her two clinchers helped earn her a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week for August 27.
The defensive backline has played well as a unit in front of goalkeeper Alex Kubrick, limiting the opponents to 37 shots during the homestand. Kubrick, with the back-to-back shutouts to start the year, was picked as the August 26 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week.
Offensively, the Niners have placed over one-half (28-of-51) of their shots on goal. SarahAnn Waugh and Sara Trexler both tallied scores in Tuesday’s come-from-behind triumph against Gardner-Webb.
Elon has started the season 1-0-1 after defeating Coastal Carolina 2-0 last Friday on the road and earning a draw against East Carolina in its home opener Sunday.
The Phoenix are led by sixth-year head coach Chris Neal, the reigning Southern Conference Coach of the Year.
Three different players have scored goals for Elon in 2013. Nicole Dennion, Alissa Pantuosco and Chelsey Stark all have found the back of the net in the early going of the season. Pantuosco’s tally proved to be the game winner against the Chanticleers.
Kate Murphy has been the only player to see time in the cage, posting a 0.45 goals-against average in 200 minutes of action thus far. She has faced just eight shots, making three saves.
The 49ers lead the all-time series, 2-0, though the two teams have not met since 2000. Charlotte won both meetings by a combined 7-0 score, including a 5-0 victory in the first matchup in 1999 in the Queen City.
