49ers Open Season On The Road At Denver

The nationally-ranked Charlotte 49ers (18th in Soccer America poll, 21st in NSCAA poll) begin the 2013 season on the road at the University of Denver, Friday, August 30 at 9:30 pm. The 49ers are 8-6 since 2000 in their season-opener.

Last season, the 49ers defeated Denver, 2-1, in double overtime at Transamerica Field in their season opener, August 25, 2012. Aidan Kirkbride scored both of Charlotte’s goals including a dramatic goal with four seconds left in regulation sending the game into overtime.

Charlotte returns seven starters and 15 letterwinners from last season’s Atlantic 10 Regular-Season Champion and NCAA Tournament participant squad. The 49ers went 15-4-3 and 7-1-1 in the Atlantic 10 last season.

Kevin Langan, who is entering his second season as head coach, returns several key players including All-Atlantic 10 and All-Mid-Atlantic region selections Tyler Gibson, Thomas Allen, Giuseppe Gentile and Klay Davis.

Charlotte also return stalwarts Nick Barnhorst, Dominic Bonilla, Biko Bradnock-Brennan, Aidan Kirkbride, David Mayer, Will Mayhew, Kyle Parker, Anthony Perez and Robby Thomas.

Charlotte defeated Winthrop, 2-0, behind goals by Perez and Gibson in their first exhibition game, Tuesday, August 20.

Charlotte defeated Davidson, 4-1, behind two goals by Gentile and goals by Will Mayhew and Kyle Parker last Saturday night, August 24.
