Five newcomers joined the eight returning players for the start of Charlotte volleyball fall practice, which continues into its first weekend on campus.
Head coach Chris Redding noted that his team comes in to fall practice as strong as ever with an emphasis placed on strength and conditioning this offseason. The 49ers were just 10-16 last year and the words “depth and competition” were things that Redding said were important to the squad as they move into a Conference USA schedule in 2013.
The 49ers got off to a hot start last year, winning eight of the first 11 matches, before suffering injuries to key players entering the conference phase of the schedule. Charlotte swept the East Carolina Classic and Runnin’ Bulldog Classic in the opening and third weekends of play.
This season, Charlotte will play their opening-weekend tournament at nearby Davidson, taking on CSU Bakersfield in the opening match of the year on Friday, August 30 at noon. The 49ers will play host Davidson that evening at 7 p.m. before finishing the tournament on Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against Charleston Southern.
The 49ers’ home debut will be in the 49er Invite, which begins Friday, September 20. Charlotte hosts South Carolina State at 7 p.m. and plays Tennessee State on Saturday at 12:30 and finishes with Elon that night at 7 p.m.
Redding begins his seventh season at Charlotte in 2013. The team is led by returning middle hitter Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School), who led the team with 294 kills and a .258 attack percentage in 2012. She was the only player to play in all 91 sets last season.
