Charlotte baseball landed two players on the 2013 All-Atlantic 10 Conference Team, including Co-Player of the Year Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS), the league announced today. The 49ers also had an All-Rookie performer and two players make the All-Academic Team.
Seager, who is a junior and played both in the outfield and at first base this year, finished in the top five in the league in most offensive categories, including batting average (third, .363), slugging percentage (fifth, .505), on-base percentage (second, .457), runs scored (tied for second, 44), hits (tied for first, 74), doubles (first, 21) and ended tied for sixth in the league with 38 RBI. Seager’s 21 doubles are tied for 13th nationally and he is 26th in the nation in doubles per game. Seager is nationally ranked also in hits (87th) and batting average (88th).
He is the seventh person at Charlotte to be named Player or Pitcher of the Year, joining Tim Collie (Player, Metro Conference, 1995), James Matan (Player, C-USA, 1998), John Maine (Pitcher, C-USA, 2001), Adam Mills (Pitcher, A-10, 2007), Chris Taylor (Co-Player, A-10, 2008) and Andrew Smith (Pitcher, A-10, 2011) with a league superlative.
Also making the First-Team All-Conference was starting pitcher Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS), who tossed his first career complete game, a one-hit shutout, on May 4 against Butler. Hudgens finished the regular season with a 6-1 mark overall, with a team-best 74 strikeouts and 2.71 ERA. He finished fourth in the league in ERA, second with a .211 opponent batting average against, tied for second in strikeouts and tied for 11th in wins.
Redshirt freshman catcher Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell) was among the 12-member All-Rookie Team announced by the league. Lang led Charlotte with four home runs and was in a three-tie to lead all first-year players with 38 RBI, despite missing the last eight games of the season.
The Academic All-Conference Team was represented by Charlotte with two of the 12-team group. Senior Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) and sophomore Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) both made the squad this season. Basen posted a 3.97 GPA in double majors of Accounting and Finance, is among 10 finalists for the Senior Class Award and has already been awarded a First-Team Academic All-District Award, awaiting selections for Academic All-America honors this week. He finished third in the league with 43 RBI, was a Second-Team All-League and Second-Team Academic All-America selection last year, and has played 203 games at Charlotte.
Elwood finished second on the team with 34 runs and a .341 batting average, while he scored 34 runs and drove in 34 RBI for the 49ers. He is a Pre-Business major with a 3.54 GPA. The 49ers have posted a 3.0 team GPA for seven consecutive semesters, including a 3.135 last fall.
Charlotte is hosting the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament this week at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The 49ers shared the A-10 Regular-Season title with Saint Louis and Rhode Island and finished 34-21, 17-7 in the league. Charlotte is seeded second and plays Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. against seventh-seeded Richmond to the open the tournament.
