After tossing a one-hit shutout Saturday evening, Charlotte junior pitcher Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) has been named Co-Pitcher of the Week in the Atlantic 10 Conference, officials announced today. Hudgens leads the league with his third weekly honor, taking Pitcher of the Week three times in the last four weeks in the league.

Hudgens’ effort was the longest outing of his career and his first complete-game, as he limited visiting Butler to one hit to help Charlotte finish off a doubleheader and weekend sweep of the Bulldogs, 5-0. It was Charlotte’s first shutout of the season, and the first of Hudgens’ career.

The weekend sweep vaulted Charlotte into a three-way tie for first in the Atlantic 10 Conference, at 13-5 in league play. Charlotte is 29-19 overall this season.

In his last four starts, a span of 29.2 innings, Hudgens has allowed four runs on 16 hits, striking out 27 batters, winning all four contests, against A-10 opponents. For the season, he leads the team with a 6-0 mark and a 2.69 ERA, with 64 strikeouts in 63.2 innings pitched. He is 4-0 in A-10 games only, with a 1.82 conference ERA, with 37 strikeouts in 39.2 league innings pitched and an A-10 batting average against of just .191.

Hudgens shared the award with VCU’s Heath Dwyer, who struck out 10 in a five-hit shutout of then-league leader Saint Louis.

The shutout was the first for Charlotte this season and the one-hit shutout was the first for Charlotte since limiting Richmond to one hit on May 26, 2011 in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament in a combined effort. The last one-hit shutout thrown by Charlotte was February 18, 2007. Charlotte’s last shutout came at home on March 13, 2012 against USC Upstate and Charlotte has not had a pitcher toss a complete-game shutout since April 15, 2011. The 49ers are 9-1 in games that Hudgens starts this season.

Charlotte has won five in a row, two of them credited to Hudgens, with its next series at home against Dayton this coming weekend.
