Charlotte scored three runs in the sixth, but the game was already out of hand as Temple limited the 49ers to three hits in an 8-3 win to open an Atlantic 10 Conference series at Skip Wilson Field Friday. The Owls improve to 16-21 overall, 6-10 in the A-10. Charlotte slips to 24-29 on the season, 8-5 in the league.

The Owls scored two in the first and two in the second on Charlotte starting pitcher Tyler Barnette (Hickory, N.C.). In the fourth, Barnette had to leave early after getting hit on the leg by a line drive in the previous inning. Two of the four runs scored against Charlotte in the fourth were his responsibility as the Owls ran up an 8-0 lead.

The 49ers got their first hit in the fifth before getting two more in the sixth to score their three lone runs of the day. Senior third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) drove a single to left to score catcher Patrick Raley (Franklin, Tenn.), who had reached on an error to start the inning. After a double steal, Basen and senior center fielder Michael Green (Richmond, Va. / Thomas Dale HS) both scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to five.

Temple starting pitcher Patrick Peterson was in control for his seven innings of work, allowing the three hits and a walk, with four strikeouts for his second win (2-5) of the season.

Barnette took the loss for Charlotte (3-3), giving up six runs, five earned, in 3.2 innings. He allowed seven hits and two walks in that span, with two strikeouts.

Redshirt junior reliever Corey Roberts (Charlotte, N.C. / Olympic HS) pitched a season-high 4.1 innings. He allowed just two hits with one strikeout in that span, holding the Owls scoreless in the final innings.

Temple third baseman Henry Knabe collected a game-high three hits. Left fielder Allen Stiles had the game-high total of two RBI. Five 49ers had one hit each, with Basen’s RBI the only tally for Charlotte.

Game two of the series will be Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

NOTES: Charlotta has dropped three games in a row, with the opponent scoring first in all three… Charlotte is 7-16 when the opponent scores first in the game… The 49ers are 3-15 this season when scoring three or fewer runs.
