South Carolina takes two from Charlotte

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Charlotte softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to South Carolina earlier on Wednesday evening at Beckham Field.

Charlotte (20-24 overall) fell 10-2 in game one and 5-0 in game two. The Gamecocks improved to 27-20 overall.

In game one, the Gamecocks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, Kristen Struett singled through the left side to drive in a run. South Carolina extended its advantage to 3-0 in the second.

Charlotte finally broke loose in the fourth inning after Chelsea Ingersoll recorded the 49ers’ first hit of the game, a single to left field with two outs. Samantha Slade walked and freshman Jessica Plemmons singled to right field and drove in a pair of runs to slice South Carolina’s lead to 3-2.

After two quiet innings from each team the Gamecocks unleashed seven runs in the sixth inning and pushed their lead 10-2 in the sixth inning to end the game.

Katie Watkins fell to 12-14 in the circle and allowed eight runs on six hits. Kalie Lang tossed the last inning for the Niners and gave up a pair of runs on four hits. Julie Sarratt improved to 9-5 and finished with a game-high six strikeouts.

In game two, the Gamecocks secured an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs and bases loaded, Olivia Lawerence hit a two-run RBI single to right field. In the third inning, Shelby Gonzales drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle to give South Carolina the 4-0 edge.

Gonzales pushed the score to 5-0 in the fifth inning with a solo home run.

Samantha Slade, Alex Rogers, and Ingersoll each finished with a hit in game two.

Chelsea Lisikatos (6-9) recorded two strikeouts in the loss.  Aubrey Broyles (8-8) tallied a game-leading seven strikeouts.

Charlotte will host Saint Louis on Friday, April 26 for a single game at 4 p.m. The Niners will face SLU on Saturday, April 27 for a noon game. The 49ers will cap off the weekend on Sunday with a twinbill against Butler at 12 p.m. which will also serve as Senior Day for Briana GwaltneyKalie LangLindsey Holloman, and Chelsea Stamey.
