NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Junior Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) became the Atlantic 10 Conference’s first back-to-back winner of one of its weekly awards by repeating at the A-10 Pitcher of the Week, the league announced today.
Hudgens set new career highs for strikeouts and innings pitched over the weekend, tossing eight innings and striking out 10 against the 13th-best batting average in the country in Xavier on Sunday in Cincinnati to give Charlotte the weekend road series. The strikeout total was a season high for any Charlotte pitcher in a game this season.
Hudgens struck out two batters in each of the first four innings and shut down an offense that had scored eight runs per game at Hayden Field to that point as the 49ers gave him his second win in conference to lead the team.
In his last 15.1 innings pitched, Hudgens has allowed eight hits (for an opponent batting average of .154) and two walks with two earned runs, while striking out 15 A-10 batters.
For the season, he is 4-0 with a team best 3.10 ERA, leading Charlotte with 52 strikeouts. His WHIP of 1.24 leads the starters on the squad.
Charlotte has had six student-athletes named to a weekly conference award in baseball. Sophomore Brad Elwood was named Player of the Week last week along with Hudgens’ Pitcher of the Week award. Senior Shane Basen won Co-Player of the Week on February 25, freshman Sean Geoghegan was tabbed Rookie of the Week on March 11, with junior Justin Seager winning Player of the Week on March 18 and redshirt freshman Brett Lang earning Rookie of the Week on March 25.
