CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Charlotte women’s tennis team claimed an early lead only to fall 4-3 against Richmond in the Atlantic 10 Championships quarterfinals Friday at The Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
“This was a hard-fought match against a strong Richmond team today,” head coach Michaela Gorman said. “We played well and fought extremely hard, but unfortunately, we came up short.”
The 49ers earned the doubles point for the second-straight conference tournament match, picking up victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots for the 1-0 advantage.
After being pushed to a tiebreaker Thursday, the top Charlotte (11-7) tandem of Anne Ekelund and Lisa Grosselius picked up an 8-4 triumph over Melissa Kandinata and Kayta Salas. The point then was awarded to the Niners after the No. 2 duo of Tyler Baker and Natsuko Takayanagi defeated Elizabeth Sims and Alexandra Smyth, 8-5.
Charlotte’s momentum carried over to singles action, as it increased its lead to 3-0 behind back-to-back straight-set decisions.
Ekelund tallied a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Smyth at the No. 5 slot, while Takayanagi posted a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Sims in the No. 2 meeting.
Unfortunately for the 49ers, they were unable to hold off Richmond (11-11) in the last four matches, allowing the Spiders to complete the comeback in a match that took nearly four hours to complete.
“I would like to thank our five seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program over the past five years and wish them luck as they enter the next chapter of their lives. They all will be greatly missed.”
Charlotte’s season concludes with double-digit victories for the eighth time in Gorman’s 10 seasons despite having to battle through injuries and weather issues all spring. Friday’s contest marked the end of the careers for seniors Emmanuelle Briant, Ekelund, Guneva, Ginny Johnson and Zinn.
